I'd always wanted to do a silent film in the exact style of a film of the 1920s. Inspired by scenes from "The Wind" that were shown as part of the "Hollywood" documentary series, I wrote a script that incorporated all of the elements that I thought would make a great silent thriller. There were a number of challenging elements to the production - finding an old boat house not the least of them. The University of Western Sydney has one at their Parramatta campus, but wanted too much for its hire, so we ended up using an old shed and positioning near the water with special effects. We got a wonderful actress, Danielle Hudson, willing to do the opening swim in not especially pleasant water - and she later found out she was pregnant (baby since born healthily!). The brilliant Michael Mirana of course came about as the "maniac". Danielle's husband was also very good as the trooper - some most difficult moments requiring a lot of self discipline. |
